life

To show just who I am

eye loveIn the darkness, I wait for the time to show myself

Only minutes away and I may emerge

Here you come again forcing my trueness under

Smothering me until my own eyes cannot see me

I do not understand why our differences cannot be shown.

You hate me

The me that I cannot show around you

I must find a way out,

Away to show just who I am

I wrote this in the mid 80’s and never gave it a title, although it is published in my book, The Shadow of the Mind’s Heart. Written in a time where I thought I would never be allowed to be myself. I could not express myself in my clothes, my hair, makeup or even in the way I acted. It took me nearly three decades later to escape the vicious cycle of being told who and how to be. Today, I am able to let every bit of my personality show – the weird and quirky side as well as the smart and successful side.

This poem brings back painful memories but a simple shopping trip yesterday really made me reflect on my past and my soul hurt for it, BUT it was so happy for such a small gesture that was made. I can be me! The me that loves bright and colorful things, the me that is not like everyone else. The me that can be loved for being me.

I shared this piece with you today to remind anyone who may be struggling with a relationship (of any kind) that holds them back or down. Let it go – walk away and be yourself. Find the you that you want to be. Find the you that you will love. Find the you that when you lay your head down at night you can be proud of.
